Mt. Cuba Center, a leading native plant garden and conservation organization, is now offering a comprehensive Ecological Gardening Certificate program designed for both amateur and professional horticulturalists. The program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to create ecologically sound landscapes that benefit both people and the environment.
The certificate program is intended for a broad audience, including backyard gardeners, landscape professionals and anyone interested in the connection between native plants and wildlife. According to program materials, the curriculum focuses on understanding life in the soil, eco-friendly gardening techniques, and the identification and cultivation of native plant species. Participants will learn to attract and support beneficial wildlife, such as birds, bees, and butterflies, by designing biologically diverse landscapes.
The program’s curriculum emphasizes applying organic gardening practices to create resilient environments and designing gardens that mimic natural patterns and systems. Students will also learn sustainable techniques for managing plant health issues. Upon completion, graduates will be able to identify and utilize native plants, apply organic practices, and design ecologically sound gardens, effectively becoming conservators of natural habitats.
Mt. Cuba Center educators, described as leading experts in ecology, horticulture, and native plant conservation, will lead the courses. The program is designed to foster a collaborative learning environment, with opportunities for students to share perspectives and engage in hands-on field experiences. A student testimonial highlighted the program’s ability to provide “expertise and confidence” for launching a related business.
The program is flexible, with students able to complete the approximately 130 hours of coursework over a period ranging from one to several years. The total cost for the program, including materials and registration, is estimated at $3,400. Students seeking the Ecological Gardening Certificate must formally register for the program – a one-time fee of $40 – and pass an evaluation for each course, which may take the form of a project, quiz, or exam. Registered students receive a Mt. Cuba nametag, custom binder, and Tervis tumbler.
The Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System (LA CES™) recognizes the importance of continuing education for landscape architects, and Mt. Cuba Center’s program may offer opportunities for professionals to earn continuing education credits. Students seeking a Certificate in Ecological Gardening must take an onsite exam, according to LA CES™ information.
