Romanian police have issued over 50 fines to truck drivers for violating traffic restrictions on the Valea Oltului (Olt Valley) section of DN7 national road, resulting in approximately 30,000 lei (roughly $6,500 USD) in penalties. The enforcement action, conducted on March 19th and 20th, 2026, targeted drivers of vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum authorized mass.
The restrictions, implemented at the beginning of the week, are in place to ensure safety during ongoing slope protection work along the DN7 between Râmnicu Vâlcea and Boița. According to the Vâlcea County Police Inspectorate (IPJ Vâlcea), officers, working alongside representatives from the Romanian Road Authority (ISCTR), conducted checks to verify compliance with the regulations.
A total of 54 fines were issued, with 48 specifically related to violations of Government Emergency Ordinance (OUG) no. 43/1997 concerning the road regime. The remaining fines were issued for other traffic violations under OUG no. 195/2002. The restrictions are in effect daily between 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM. Drivers violating the restrictions face fines ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 lei (approximately $215 to $430 USD).
IPJ Vâlcea stated that the enforcement actions aim to prevent accidents and maintain traffic safety during the roadworks. Authorities are urging truck drivers to adhere to the time restrictions and utilize alternative routes when necessary.
The restrictions on the DN7 sector between Râmnicu Vâlcea and Boița are scheduled to remain in effect until June 15th. The regulations apply to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, with exceptions for passenger transport, legal holidays, and officially declared days off. Vehicles under 7.5 tonnes may also face temporary restrictions or single-lane traffic with pilot escorts between 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM, depending on the progress of the roadworks.
On March 18th, 2026, officers from the Vâlcea County Road Service, along with ISCTR representatives, issued approximately 24,000 lei in fines after checking 31 freight vehicles. Eleven violations were recorded, eight of which were directly related to the weight restrictions. Authorities have indicated that further traffic enforcement operations will continue.
