Comic Book Author Visits Local School Inspires Young Readers

Comic book writer Jérôme Hamon visited students at the René-Guy-Cadou elementary school in Sérent this weekend as part of the Oust aux livres festival. “When you are an author, you are alone with your stories. It’s when you meet readers that they come to life,” Hamon stated, according to a report from local news sources.

Hamon engaged with CM1-CM2 students in the morning and then CE1-CE2 students, taught by Jacqueline Rouillé, in the afternoon. Prior to his career in comics, Hamon worked as a financial analyst in New York, followed by roles in cinema, video games, and at France Télévisions. “I studied business, but I realized that my job didn’t please me,” he explained, noting his desire to tell stories.

During the session, Hamon outlined the fundamental structure of a narrative, referencing the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. “Aristotle said: a story is a beginning, a middle, and an end,” he told the students, illustrating the three acts of a story: introduction, development, and conclusion. He explained that in comic books, the work involves “trying to summarize the story” to condense the narrative.

Students Lynn and Ethan expressed their enthusiasm for the workshop, stating, “I found it very good,” and “it really pleased me, I loved it.” Rouillé emphasized the goal of the visit was “to give them the desire to go towards the book.”
