A ​vehicle submerged in the Rhine River at the⁤ Neuburgweier ferry pier,located near ⁣Rheinstetten in ⁤the⁣ Karlsruhe​ district,on⁣ Saturday⁤ evening. Eyewitnesses⁣ reported the incident to ⁤emergency services, initiating a large-scale rescue operation.

Rescue Efforts Hampered by Strong Currents

According to a statement ‍from the fire department, over 130 personnel from the water police, fire department, rescue services, and ​the​ German Life-Saving Society (DLRG) were deployed to the scene. Police reports confirm the use of a sonar boat in the search⁤ efforts.

Initial attempts ‍to ⁣recover the vehicle were hindered by⁢ the Rhine’s strong currents,as⁢ stated by the fire department. Rescue operations ​were temporarily suspended around⁤ 2:30 a.m. local time, and ⁤shipping traffic on the⁣ Rhine was briefly halted.

Driver Deceased, Investigation⁢ Underway

Rescue operations resumed Sunday morning, culminating in the recovery of the ⁣vehicle that afternoon. Authorities confirmed‍ the ‌driver‌ was inside ⁤the⁤ car. As of this report, the driver’s identity remains unknown.

The police are currently investigating the incident and have indicated they ‍believe⁢ it was an accident. The water police ​and traffic accident investigation unit have‍ assumed obligation⁣ for the ongoing investigation, according to official police ⁣statements.
