A vehicle submerged in the Rhine River at the Neuburgweier ferry pier,located near Rheinstetten in the Karlsruhe district,on Saturday evening. Eyewitnesses reported the incident to emergency services, initiating a large-scale rescue operation.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Strong Currents
According to a statement from the fire department, over 130 personnel from the water police, fire department, rescue services, and the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG) were deployed to the scene. Police reports confirm the use of a sonar boat in the search efforts.
Initial attempts to recover the vehicle were hindered by the Rhine’s strong currents,as stated by the fire department. Rescue operations were temporarily suspended around 2:30 a.m. local time, and shipping traffic on the Rhine was briefly halted.
Driver Deceased, Investigation Underway
Rescue operations resumed Sunday morning, culminating in the recovery of the vehicle that afternoon. Authorities confirmed the driver was inside the car. As of this report, the driver’s identity remains unknown.
The police are currently investigating the incident and have indicated they believe it was an accident. The water police and traffic accident investigation unit have assumed obligation for the ongoing investigation, according to official police statements.
