Belgian Tax Changes 2026: Deductions Removed for Quadricycles, Home Staff & More

The Belgian government is eliminating a series of tax deductions, impacting a relatively small number of taxpayers, as part of a broader effort to simplify the country’s tax code. The changes, announced by Minister Jambon, will remove benefits for quadricycles, domestic employees, and certain energy-saving home improvements, among others.

Among the deductions being phased out is a tax reduction for employing domestic help, utilized by only 187 taxpayers, according to the cabinet of Minister Jambon. Similarly, a reduction for electric quadricycles, used by 110 individuals, and a benefit for private aircraft (pricaf), claimed by just 18 users, will also be discontinued. A tax break related to the installation of electric vehicle charging stations will also be removed.

The government is also eliminating a supplemental allowance for commuters traveling more than 75 kilometers to work, a measure previously available to certain workers. In the Flemish region, deductions related to mortgage loans taken out in 2025 are being removed as the initial ten-year tax period for those loans expires. Wallonia has already eliminated the “chèque-habitat” as of January 1, 2025.

Further changes include the removal of a tax reduction for interest paid on loans taken out between 2009 and 2011 to finance energy-efficient home improvements. A tax advantage linked to older life insurance policies eligible for a long-term savings reduction will be discontinued for the 2026 tax year.

Minister Jambon characterized these changes as a “first concrete step” toward a simpler and more efficient tax system. “We must continue to simplify the declaration,” he stated, signaling that further adjustments are planned as additional provisions of the Arizona code come into effect.

The specific codes being removed from the tax system include: 1029, 1043, 1044, 1378/2378, 1379/2379, 1423/2423, 1424/2424, 1386/2386, 1429/2429, 1256/2256, 3344/4344, 3345/4345, 3346/4346, 3338/4338, 3339/4339, 1143, 1370/2370, 1371/2371, 1138/2138, 1139/2139, 1148/2148, 1149/2149, 1146/2146, 1136, 1137, 1355/2355, 1359/2359, 1351/2351, 1354/2354, 3385/4385, 3363/4363, 3364/4364, 1389, 1346/2346, 1344/2344, 1365/2365, 1329/2329, 1347, 1367, 1348, 1323/2323, 1325, 1326, 1341, 1613/2613, 1666/2666, 1622/2622, 1678/2678.
