Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez played a pivotal role in his team’s progression to the Europa League quarterfinals, contributing directly to John McGinn’s opening goal against Lille on Thursday night. The Premier League side secured a 2-0 victory, completing a 3-0 aggregate win and setting up a quarterfinal clash with Bologna.
The Argentine shot-stopper’s influence extended beyond preventing goals; he initiated the attack that led to McGinn’s crucial strike. Just seconds after making a vital save, Martínez launched a long, accurate kick that found Jadon Sancho, who then provided the assist for McGinn to score. “It was brilliant from Emi, but it highlights Jadon’s performance, his best in a Villa shirt,” said McGinn following the match, as reported by ESPN. “He was man of the match tonight by a mile.”
Villa captain McGinn described Martínez as “a mad man” and “a huge kid inside,” acknowledging his lively character alongside his undeniable talent. The goalkeeper’s celebration after the goal, though, drew the ire of Lille supporters, who have a history of animosity towards Martínez stemming from his performances in the 2022 World Cup final and a previous encounter during the 2024 Conference League, where Villa prevailed on penalties.
Lille forward Olivier Giroud acknowledged the impact of Martínez’s assist, expressing frustration with his team’s inability to contain the goalkeeper. “We couldn’t score, we didn’t build it. And Martínez’s pass — I tried to stay in front of him but he had an amazing assist and it’s frustrating,” Giroud told TNT Sports.
Leon Bailey added a second goal late in the match, solidifying Villa’s victory. The win marks Aston Villa’s third successive appearance in a European quarter-final under manager Unai Emery, fueling hopes of a trophy this season. Emery, who has quickly become Villa’s most successful manager, was recognized before the match with a Tifo display from the home fans celebrating his 100 wins in charge.
Emery emphasized the importance of consistency and defensive solidity in his post-match assessment. “We are focusing all the season through the Premier League, that is the priority,” he stated. “The Europa League is a competition that is very tough to win, but we have to enjoy the process, enjoying the way, competing, using different players and trying to compete, it can help us uncover a structure in our squad.”
Despite the victory, questions remain regarding Martínez’s long-term future at Aston Villa. The club has not publicly addressed speculation surrounding a potential departure for the Argentina international.
