Anne Hathaway Responds to Oscar Appearance Critics with Humor & Beauty Secrets

Anne Hathaway addressed online speculation regarding her appearance at the 2026 Oscars with a humorous video posted to Instagram, referencing her role in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada and its upcoming sequel. The actress, who presented alongside Anna Wintour at the awards ceremony on Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, responded to comments questioning changes to her face.

Hathaway’s appearance on the red carpet, where she wore a floral Valentino gown – a choice many interpreted as a nod to a memorable line from The Devil Wears Prada about florals for spring – sparked considerable discussion online. However, attention quickly shifted to her complexion, with social media users posting comments such as “What has Anne Hathaway done to her face and why?” and “Anne Hathaway debuting her new face,” according to reports.

In the Instagram video, filmed during her makeup preparation for the event, Hathaway jokingly alluded to her character in the 2020 film The Witches. “This is The Witches 2. The return of the Grand High Witch. She discovered life as a mouse and has returned,” she said.

The actress then revealed a small braid on each side of her head, hidden within her hairstyle, as the true source of her more sculpted appear. “And that is the secret,” she stated, accompanied by Rosalía’s song “SAOKO.”

Dr. Ross Perry, medical director of Cosmedics clinics, offered analysis to the Daily Mail, suggesting that subtle aesthetic procedures could explain Hathaway’s appearance. He cited potential options including small, strategically placed Botox injections to smooth lines, dermal fillers in the cheeks and mid-face and non-surgical treatments like laser resurfacing or microneedling. He also suggested a possible eyebrow lift, surgical or non-surgical.

Hathaway also shared a simple beauty trick in the video, demonstrating a hairstyling technique recommended by stylist Orlando Pita. Pita explained that he creates small braids on either side of Hathaway’s head, securing them at the back, to create a lifting effect. “And you look a little more awake,” Hathaway said, laughing.

Hathaway’s ensemble included a strapless, mermaid-style Valentino gown, black opera gloves, Bulgari jewelry, and Roger Vivier shoes. She and Wintour presented the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. During the presentation, Wintour referred to Hathaway as “Emily,” a reference to Emily Blunt, Hathaway’s co-star in the original The Devil Wears Prada, prompting a reaction from the audience and further fueling anticipation for the upcoming sequel, slated for release this year.
