AI in Insurance: CEO-Led Investment & Execution – BCG Radar 2026

Nearly nine in ten insurance company CEOs are now directly responsible for artificial intelligence strategy, a dramatic increase signaling a fundamental shift in how the industry views the technology. According to the 2026 BCG AI Radar report, 87% of insurance CEOs identify as the primary decision-makers on AI, significantly exceeding the 72% global average.

The report, based on a survey of 2,360 executives including 640 CEOs across 16 markets, reveals a sustained commitment to AI investment within the insurance sector. A striking 91% of insurers intend to maintain or increase their AI investments in 2026, even if those investments do not yield immediate financial returns. This contrasts with a broader trend where organizations may scale back investments lacking short-term profitability.

This heightened CEO involvement and continued investment are driven by a growing confidence in AI’s potential return on investment. Eighty-two percent of insurance CEOs are more optimistic about AI’s ROI than they were a year ago, according to the BCG data. The findings suggest AI is no longer viewed as an experimental initiative within insurance, but rather as a core component of strategic execution.

The BCG AI Radar 2026 report highlights a direct link between AI implementation and key performance indicators for insurance companies. AI initiatives are now tied to CEO accountability, sustained capital commitment, and clear performance expectations. This level of integration signifies a move beyond proof-of-concept projects toward enterprise-wide deployment and measurable results.

Corporations generally are expecting to double their spending on AI in 2026, increasing from 0.8% to approximately 1.7% of revenues, according to BCG. The survey data underscores a long-term commitment to building AI capabilities, with 94% of organizations planning to sustain or increase AI investment regardless of short-term returns.
