On Wednesday, March 20, 2026, the Hospital da Cidade in Maceió, Brazil, highlighted the critical link between oral health and overall well-being, coinciding with the annual World Oral Health Day. The hospital emphasized that often-underestimated oral health issues can extend beyond the mouth and impact vital organs, including the heart and lungs and complicate conditions like diabetes.
Dr. Cármen Calheiros, coordinator of Hospital Dentistry at the institution, stated that alterations within the oral cavity can have systemic effects. The hospital is reinforcing integration between oral and general health, particularly within its inpatient routines, according to a press release. Rapid dental assessments are now standard for hospitalized patients, and specialized care is offered to individuals with special needs.
World Oral Health Day, established in 2007 by the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) – now World Dental Federation – initially observed on September 12th, the birthday of FDI founder Dr. Charles Godon, was moved to March 20th in 2013 to avoid conflicts with the FDI World Dental Congress. The date, 3/20, was chosen to symbolize the ideal number of teeth: 20 baby teeth, 32 adult teeth, and a goal of zero cavities, according to the FDI.
The Brazilian Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) also marked the day by stressing the fundamental role of preventative dentistry in maintaining quality of life. Preventative measures include early childhood oral hygiene education, fluoridation of water supplies and toothpastes, and regular dental check-ups for professional cleaning and early detection of oral diseases, including oral cancer. The CFO noted that preventative dentistry can also help combat infections.
According to the FDI, over 90% of the global population will experience some form of oral disease in their lifetime. In Brazil, dental caries remain a significant public health concern, with a 56% prevalence rate among 12-year-olds, as reported in the 2010 National Oral Health Survey.
The World Dental Federation’s current campaign, running through 2023, centers on the theme “Be Proud of Your Mouth,” encouraging individuals to value and care for their oral health at all stages of life. The campaign aims to empower people with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain fine oral hygiene.
The Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro also reported advancements in dental assistance within the city, noting that oral health is “crucial in the maintenance of integral health and the quality of life of the citizen.”
