BookTok Drives Book Sales: Data & Bestsellers from Europe

More than 50 million books recommended by the #BookTok community on TikTok were sold across Europe in 2025, generating over 800 million euros in revenue, according to a recent TikTok announcement citing analysis from NielsenIQ BookData and Media Control. The surge in sales, reported on March 19, 2026, highlights the growing influence of the social media platform on the European book market.

Germany accounted for the largest share of these sales, with approximately 28 million books sold that were influenced by TikTok recommendations or viral trends. This represents more than double the number sold in 2023, generating 482 million euros in revenue, according to the data. The figures encompass sales from brick-and-mortar bookstores, e-commerce platforms, and other distribution channels, focusing on titles demonstrably boosted by #BookTok, such as those featured on bestseller lists or experiencing significant sales increases coinciding with TikTok trends.

The impact of BookTok is particularly pronounced among younger readers. A study by Media Control in Germany found that more than one-third of individuals aged 16 to 39 discover new books through TikTok. Nearly half of this demographic now spends more money on books than they did two years ago, and roughly a third have purchased a book after seeing it recommended on the platform. Two-thirds of these younger readers indicated that creators influence their purchasing decisions, at least partially.

The BookTok phenomenon is no longer limited to a niche audience, according to TikTok. The platform reports that individuals aged 30 to 39 are a rapidly growing segment of BookTok buyers. The range of genres featured on the BookTok bestseller list has also expanded significantly, now encompassing 17 genres, moving beyond the initial focus on romance titles. Mercedes Ron currently holds the most entries on the BookTok Bestseller list, with TikTok attributing more than 60 chart placements to her Culpables trilogy, which was later adapted into a widely viewed BookToScreen film.

Responding to the trend, TikTok is expanding the BookTok Bestseller list to the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, following its initial launch in Germany in April 2023 and subsequent expansions to Austria and Switzerland in 2024. The monthly lists will be compiled using platform insights from TikTok alongside sales data from NielsenIQ BookData, with Media Control handling the ranking process. Bookstores can now utilize official BookTok stickers to highlight titles featured on the bestseller list.

Worldwide, over 75 million posts have been published under the hashtag #BookTok, establishing it as one of the most active online literary communities. Readers share reviews, recommendations, and discussions, reviving interest in older titles and propelling them to international bestseller status. German author Caroline Wahl, for example, utilizes her TikTok account to provide insights into her work and engage directly with a dedicated reading community.
