Labubu Dolls Coming to the Big Screen with Sony Pictures

Morelia, Mexico – Sony Pictures and Pop Mart have confirmed a co-development agreement for a feature film based on Labubu, the popular Chinese collectible character, according to announcements made on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

The project, first reported by Quadratín Michoacán, will combine live-action filming with computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the world of Labubu to the big screen. Pop Mart, the company responsible for manufacturing the “feo pero adorable” (ugly but adorable) dolls, confirmed the alliance.

Created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu has gained a global following, attracting attention from celebrities like Rihanna and Dua Lipa. The dolls are typically sold in blind boxes for around $40, with rare models fetching thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Pop Mart reported selling over 100 million Labubu figures last year, reflecting the growing international impact of Chinese-made products.

The film will be directed by British filmmaker Paul King, known for his work on Wonka and Paddington, and co-written by King and Steven Levenson. Lung will serve as executive producer. Forbes reported the official announcement on March 18, 2026.

With over 600 stores in more than 30 countries, Pop Mart anticipates the film will further expand the reach of the Labubu brand into the entertainment sector. The project will adapt the universe of “The Monsters,” Lung’s original creation.

Sony Pictures and Pop Mart have not yet announced a release date or further details regarding the film’s plot or cast.
