Thomas Gottschalk Underwent Marathon Cancer Surgery,Reveals Wife Karina
MUNICH – German television icon Thomas Gottschalk,75,recently endured two extensive surgeries totaling 13 hours under anesthesia as part of his cancer treatment,his wife Karina revealed. The procedures, involving the removal of parts of his ureter and bladder, were followed by 33 radiation treatments, marking a grueling medical journey for the beloved entertainer.
Karina Gottschalk described the initial surgery as “just the beginning,” recounting how Thomas needed immediate intervention. Weeks later, a second operation required surgeons to reopen all sutures and remove large portions of soft tissue in the pelvis, keeping the 75-year-old under anesthesia for another six hours. ”Again the fear, again the anesthesia, again the fight for life,” Karina shared, admitting the ordeal nearly broke her.
The revelation comes as Gottschalk, a mainstay of german television for decades, has largely remained private about his health struggles. Bladder cancer is among the moast common cancers diagnosed, with over 80,000 new cases expected in the US alone in 2024, according to the American Cancer Society. Treatment frequently enough involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, depending on the stage and grade of the cancer.
Following the surgeries, Thomas and karina secretly commuted to the clinic daily for radiation, with the entertainer finally discharged after a 14-day hospital stay. Despite the immense physical challenge, Gottschalk has maintained a positive outlook.
“Thomas has been positive from day one and says: We can do it,” Karina stated. The couple is now focused on battling the cancer together and cherishing every moment.
