West Nile Virus Cases Rise in Ontario as health Officials Urge Prevention
TORONTO – Confirmed cases of West Nile virus are appearing in multiple Ontario communities, prompting health alerts and a renewed call for public awareness and preventative measures.Cases have been identified in Toronto, Halton, and Huron Perth, with officials emphasizing the importance of protecting against mosquito bites.
The emergence of these cases coincides with a significant heatwave in the northern Pacific Ocean, a phenomenon scientists attribute to rising global temperatures, potentially contributing to increased mosquito populations and virus transmission. While West Nile virus is not new to the region, heightened awareness is crucial for minimizing risk. Health officials are stressing that understanding the seasonal circulation of the virus and taking proactive steps to avoid mosquito exposure are key to preventing infection.
Toronto General Hospital infectious diseases specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch advises, “Make sure that people are aware that it’s circulating at certain times of the year and then taking steps to avoid and prevent mosquito bites to prevent transmission of this infection.”
Region of Waterloo Public Health recommends applying insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly during dusk and dawn – peak mosquito activity times. Individuals experiencing symptoms are encouraged to consult a doctor to avoid potential complications.
