Toreros Dominate Doubles Play at Thunderbird Invitational
PHOENIX, AZ – The University of San Diego Toreros women’s tennis team showcased a strong performance in doubles competition Sunday, November 2nd, at the Thunderbird Invitational, securing victories in all three matches against opponents from UCSB, SMU, and NAU. The Toreros continued to compete in singles play as well,with mixed results against athletes from Grand Canyon University and Arizona.
The Thunderbird Invitational provides a crucial early-season chance for the Toreros to gauge their competitive level and build momentum before the spring season.Success in doubles, a frequently decisive element in collegiate tennis, signals a promising start for USD. The tournament, hosted by Arizona State University, features a diverse field of programs, offering valuable match experience against varied playing styles.
Kristina Nordikyan and Vilma Krebs-Hyllested opened doubles play with a 6-3 win over Raphaelle Leroux and My-Anh Holmes of UC Santa Barbara. Maria Shmakova and Hannah Read followed with a 6-4 victory against Elena mireles and Addison Yang Comiskey from SMU. Completing the doubles sweep, Charlotte Keitel and Gabby Gregg defeated Mia Wolter and Leontina Stojanovic of Northern Arizona with a decisive 6-1 score.
In singles action, Charlotte Keitel delivered a strong performance, defeating Addison yang Comiskey of SMU in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. However, Elena Mireles (USD) defeated Hannah Read (USD) 6-4, 6-2. Dania Deaifi of Grand Canyon University upset Kristina Nordikyan, winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Martyna Ostrzygalo (Arizona) defeated Maria Shmakova 6-2, 6-1. Gabby Gregg secured a win over Hams Metwali of Grand Canyon University, 6-4, due to Metwali’s retirement due to injury.
