Sydney Man Shoots Up Street, 16 Wounded

SYDNEY, Oct 6 – A shooting incident near ⁣a rugby⁤ club in Sydney, ‍Australia, left ⁤over a dozen people injured on ⁣Friday, police confirmed. The incident, described as “serious and terrifying” ​by New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal ‌Lanyon, is currently under examination and​ no charges have ⁤been laid against the alleged gunman as of Friday⁢ evening.

One man ⁤presented at a hospital with ⁤a gunshot ​wound⁢ and is⁤ expected ⁣to survive. The remaining injured individuals were treated at the scene by ambulance staff ⁢for minor injuries, primarily caused by⁣ shattered⁤ glass ​from bullets impacting car windows.

witness tadgh, who spoke to ⁣the ⁢Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), described the⁤ scene as “something out of a movie, really,” recounting “very loud ‘bang, bang, bang’ and flash-bangs and ⁣sparks ‌and smoke and⁤ the whole ‍works.”

Mass shootings are‍ uncommon‍ in Australia, largely due to ‌strict gun control laws ⁤implemented ‌following the 1996 Port ‌Arthur massacre in Tasmania, where ‍a lone gunman killed 35 people. A ⁤ban on automatic and‌ semi-automatic weapons has been in ⁤place ⁤nationwide sence that tragedy.

The motive behind Friday’s⁤ shooting remains unclear, but authorities⁢ have‌ stated there are “no known links to terrorism activity or any gang activity.”

This⁣ incident follows another recent case ⁤involving ⁣an alleged gunman, Dezi freeman, ‌who remains at⁤ large after being accused of killing two police officers in August. In ‍2022, six people, including ‌two police officers, were killed in⁢ a shooting near Wieambilla, Queensland.
