Terrifying: Nearly half of Those with Diabetes Are Unaware, raising Risk of Severe Complications
Berlin - A concerning number of individuals are living with diabetes without knowing it, putting them at heightened risk of serious health consequences, including heart damage, kidney failure, and even life-threatening complications during hospital stays. Experts warn that delayed diagnosis allows the disease to silently inflict damage on vital organs and exacerbate existing health conditions.
The lack of awareness is especially alarming becuase untreated diabetes frequently goes unrecognized even during hospitalizations, often appearing as a secondary diagnosis. Common events like infections, surgeries, or even certain medications can elevate blood sugar levels, potentially triggering a diabetic coma in those previously undiagnosed. Studies reveal a meaningful portion of patients already have accompanying conditions like high blood pressure or cardiovascular issues, which are worsened by undetected diabetes.
The German Diabetes Society (DDG) strongly recommends proactive screening, particularly for at-risk individuals, utilizing methods like long-term blood sugar measurement. Early detection is crucial, not only for improving treatment outcomes but also for minimizing the risk of severe incidents while hospitalized. This underscores the importance of preventative care and increased public awareness regarding diabetes symptoms and risk factors.
