Cancer Deaths Projected to Surge Globally by 2050,New Study Warns
Geneva – A extensive global study evaluating cancer incidence and mortality across 204 countries forecasts a dramatic rise in both cases and deaths by 2050. published today, September 26, 2023, the research estimates between 16.4 and 20.7 million new cancer cases worldwide in 2023 alone, with a disproportionate impact on individuals in low- and intermediate-income nations.
The study, reported by South West, projects a 61% increase in cancer cases by 2050, escalating to nearly 18.5 million deaths – a nearly 75% jump from current figures. This alarming trend is primarily driven by two converging factors: the world’s aging population and continued global population growth. While the evaluations considered 47 cancer types, researchers acknowledge certain criteria were not fully incorporated into the analysis. The findings underscore the urgent need for increased investment in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, particularly in resource-constrained settings, to mitigate the impending health crisis.
