Gaza City – The Israeli military demolished the Al-Kawthar residential tower in western Gaza City on Sunday, marking a further escalation in its ongoing offensive aimed at occupying the city. The destruction of the tower is the latest in a series of attacks targeting high-rise buildings, raising grave concerns about the safety of civilians.
Evacuation Orders and Targeted Strikes
Eyewitness accounts confirm that Israeli military aircraft struck the Al-Kawthar tower shortly after residents received evacuation orders. This pattern of issuing immediate evacuation warnings immediatly preceding strikes has become increasingly common throughout Gaza City.
The Israeli military’s strategy involves targeting high-rise buildings across Gaza City, concurrently directing residents southward towards the Al-mawasi area in Khan Younis, described as a “safe humanitarian zone.” However, this designated zone has repeatedly come under Israeli fire, reportedly more than 100 times, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. This casts serious doubt on the safety and efficacy of the evacuation orders.
Widespread Destruction and Displacement
according to the Gaza Government Media Office, since August 11th, the Israeli army has entirely destroyed 1,600 towers and residential buildings within Gaza City. In addition, 13,000 tents utilized by displaced persons have been demolished, leading to the displacement of over 100,000 individuals. The scale of destruction is unprecedented.
Currently, the vast majority of Gaza City’s remaining population is concentrated in the western neighborhoods, which have been subjected to particularly intense and concentrated bombing since Friday. The conditions for civilians are rapidly deteriorating.
Humanitarian Crisis and International Scrutiny
Israel’s military operation, now extending beyond eight months, has resulted in the deaths of more than 64,800 Palestinians as of today. The ongoing war has also brought Gaza to the brink of famine, with widespread food insecurity and a collapsing healthcare system. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic.
The actions taken during the war are currently under scrutiny at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Israel is facing allegations of genocide. The ICJ is investigating claims of systematic violations of international law and potential war crimes committed during the conflict.
