GREENVILLE, S.C. – The VCU Rams secured an improbable victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Thursday, prevailing 80-78 in overtime. The game, played at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, saw VCU, a No. 11 seed, overcome a significant challenge from the No. 6 seeded Tar Heels.
The Rams, coached by Phil Martelli Jr., entered the tournament with a 27-7 record, having recently claimed their second consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament title. North Carolina, boasting the most NCAA tournament wins of any program with 134, arrived with a 24-8 record, but were navigating the season without star player Caleb Wilson, who was lost to injury earlier in the year.
The contest was closely fought throughout, with both teams trading leads. North Carolina leaned on the interior presence of 7-foot center Henri Veesaar, who led the Tar Heels with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Seth Trimble added 15 points for North Carolina.
VCU countered with a strong performance from Terrence Hill Jr., who scored a game-high 34 points, and Brandon Jennings, who contributed 7 points. The Rams’ defensive intensity proved crucial, forcing turnovers and disrupting the Tar Heels’ offensive rhythm. VCU finished with 10 turnovers to North Carolina’s 8.
With the score tied at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime. In the extra period, VCU maintained their composure, securing key rebounds and converting crucial free throws. According to ESPN Analytics, VCU held a 97.2% win probability during overtime, while North Carolina’s probability remained at 2.8%.
The Tar Heels’ struggles were compounded by the absence of Wilson, leaving questions about their ability to compete with elite teams in the tournament. North Carolina had a 5-3 record in Wilson’s absence, but the tournament presented a different level of competition.
The win marks a significant upset for VCU and provides an opportunity for a deep run in the tournament. For North Carolina, the loss represents an early exit and raises concerns about their ability to advance past the opening weekend for the first time since their 2022 championship run. The Rams will await the outcome of other first-round games to determine their next opponent.
