The move underscores a tightening of standards for outbound and inbound journeys, placing increased emphasis on current passport validity.
U.S. Authorities emphasize that a valid passport is essential for all international travel. A passport that has expired, or is in the process of being renewed, is considered invalid for such purposes. This could potentially prevent thousands of Americans from flying internationally if they do not address the issue promptly, according to reports.
The core issue stems from the fact that a passport serves as the primary identification document for crossing international borders. Without a current, valid passport, individuals are unable to board international flights or complete immigration controls. Authorities have clarified that even recently expired passports are not permissible for travel. Initiating the renewal process automatically invalidates the previous passport, meaning it cannot be used for travel while the renewal is pending.
The U.S. Government offers online passport renewal in certain circumstances. However, eligibility is restricted to those whose passports are valid or have expired less than five years ago, are over the age of 25, and who do not have any changes to their personal data. Crucially, applicants must not have any international travel planned within the next six weeks, as the standard processing time is not immediate. The cost for a passport booklet is $130, with additional fees for expedited service or different formats.
One significant concern highlighted by authorities is the use of unofficial websites that claim to expedite the passport process. These services are not authorized and may lead to fraud or delays. Applications are also frequently rejected due to incorrect or incomplete information, or failure to complete the process personally, as third-party submissions are not permitted.
Common errors that cause delays include entering inaccurate data, failing to respond to requests for additional information, and using websites that do not have a “.gov” domain. If the State Department requests additional information and a response is not received within the specified timeframe, the application may be canceled, requiring the applicant to start the renewal process from the beginning.
