Texas Tech Baseball to Face Texas in Saturday Exhibition
LUBBOCK, TX – Texas tech Baseball will face a significant early-season test this Saturday against the University of Texas, continuing a recently renewed rivalry. The 12-inning exhibition contest will pit the Red Raiders against the Longhorns, who are coming off a accomplished 44-14 season and their first in the Southeastern Conference.
Texas Tech returns a core of experienced players for the upcoming season, including standout slugger Logan Hughes, who led the Big 12 Conference with 19 home runs and batted .327 during the regular season. Hughes was recently ranked as the 20th-best Collage Draft Eligible hitter. Also back for the Red Raiders are four-year starting infielder Tracer Lopez, catcher Davis Rivers, Jace Souza, and Coleman Ryan.
Rivers is poised to build on a 2025 campaign where he recorded 16 extra-base hits in 122 at-bats, slugging .434 and accumulating 22 extra-base hits in 157 career at-bats. Souza,returning from an injury-shortened 2025 season,showed promise in limited action,posting more walks (4) than strikeouts (3). lopez, a versatile infielder, hit .299 with five home runs and 30 RBIs last season, while also demonstrating strong defensive play with a .974 fielding percentage and 12 stolen bases.
The Longhorns, who earned a No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament last year before falling to UTSA in the Austin Regional, will feature returning key contributors like Baseball America National Freshman of the Year Dylan Volantis and All-Austin Regional selection Casey Borba. Texas has bolstered its roster with a highly-rated recruiting class, including transfers Carson Tinney (former Notre Dame catcher) and Haiden Leffew (Wake Forest southpaw), ranked among the top players in the transfer portal by D1 Baseball. UT’s recruiting class was also named the No. 2 recruiting class by Perfect Game.
Following the exhibition against Texas, the Red Raiders will participate in an October 18 scrimmage at Oklahoma before concluding fall practice with the annual Red Black World Series.
