A video circulating online appears to show former Bulgarian national football team captain Dimitar Berbatov driving a Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Sofia with what appears to be a large handgun visible on the passenger seat. The footage, initially reported by bTV, has prompted widespread discussion on social media.
The vehicle was observed parked on 27 Велико Търново Street in central Sofia. Berbatov, who recently purchased two apartments in a new building nearby where singer Lili Ivanova also resides, was not seen in the immediate vicinity at the time the video was taken, according to reports.
The incident comes less than a month after Berbatov was appointed as a sports advisor to the interim government of Bulgaria, serving under Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov.
In 2023, Berbatov revealed an incident where he discharged a gas pistol inside his car while playing for Bayer Leverkusen, nearly causing self-asphyxiation. He described the event as an attempt to emulate a “rap-gangster” persona while driving around the city, according to reports at the time.
As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, Bulgarian authorities have not commented on the video or the presence of the apparent firearm.
