Strasbourg Reaches Conference League Quarterfinals, Faces Mainz

Strasbourg advanced to the UEFA Conference League quarterfinals after a 1-1 draw against Rijeka on Thursday evening at the Meinau Stadium, building on a 2-1 victory in the first leg. Valentin Barco’s 71st-minute equalizer secured the Alsatian club’s passage, marking their first appearance in a European competition’s quarterfinals since the 1979/1980 season.

Unlike their first-leg win in Croatia, where they scored within the opening minute, Strasbourg struggled to break down Rijeka’s defense. The home side fell behind in the 21st minute when Toni Fruk finished a move started by Amer Gojak. The goal injected uncertainty into the match for Gary O’Neil’s team, who topped their league phase and entered the tie unbeaten, but appeared uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal.

Strasbourg created numerous opportunities, particularly through their wingers. Abdoul Ouattara proved a constant threat, supported by Martial Godo on the left and Gessime Yassine on the right. Ouattara forced Rijeka goalkeeper Martin Zlomislic into several key saves (32nd, 42nd minutes), while Julio Enciso also tested the keeper (24th, 34th minutes). Strasbourg’s attacking efforts continued to lack precision in the second half (64th, 66th minutes) until Sebastian Nanasi, introduced as a substitute in the 62nd minute, displayed both intelligence and technical skill by waiting for Barco to build a run into the box, ultimately setting up the Argentinian midfielder for the crucial equalizer.

The goal shifted the momentum, and Strasbourg held firm despite late pressure from Rijeka, who came close to scoring from a corner in the 93rd minute. Strasbourg’s season remains a study in contrasts: impressive in Europe but underwhelming domestically, where they currently sit eighth in Ligue 1 (37 points), six points behind Rennes. Their recent league form has been particularly patchy, with only one win in their last five matches.

The tie did not appear to reveal any new players capable of relieving the pressure on O’Neil’s starting eleven, who are showing signs of fatigue from competing on three fronts – Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Conference League – although Sebastian Nanasi’s performance offered a glimmer of hope. Nevertheless, the victory allows Strasbourg to maintain belief in a potential trophy this season. Manager Gary O’Neil downplayed an apparent altercation between players Valentin Barco and Samir El Mourabet at full-time of the first leg, stating, “There was nothing special. They came together, as can happen in a dressing room, at training, every day, and no one sees it,” according to Yahoo Sports.

Strasbourg will face Mainz in the quarterfinals in April, a geographically convenient draw given the German city is approximately 100 miles from Strasbourg. The club’s progression was confirmed by a final score of Rijeka 1-2 Strasbourg, as reported by ESPN.
