PARAMARIBO, Suriname – President Jennifer Simons underscored the importance of intergenerational support Saturday as she honored over 500 senior citizens during Bigi Sma Dey celebrations at Waka Pasi/Palm Garden. The event, hosted by the Presidential Srefidensi Commission to commemorate 50 years of Suriname’s independence, provided a festive atmosphere with music, refreshments, adn activities for the elderly representing homes in Paramaribo and Wanica, and also neighborhoods requiring additional assistance.
President Simons recognized the lifelong contributions of the honored seniors to Suriname’s progress, highlighting the historical meaning of the Waka Pasi area as a place shaped by generations past. “Today we stand in a Paramaribo that was built by our ancestors. Every generation contributes,” she stated, emphasizing that their efforts have paved the way for a brighter future.The President also commended the young volunteers who dedicated their time to create a relaxing and enjoyable day for the seniors. “The elderly have experience and wisdom. They can still teach us a lot. That is why young people and the elderly must continue to support each other for the better of Suriname,” Simons affirmed.
Concluding the event on a positive note, President Simons wished all attendees a pleasant day, offering the Surinamese phrase, “Sranan sa wini.”
