Select Specialty Hospital Richmond: New $10M Rehab Unit Planned

Select Specialty Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, is moving forward with a $10 million expansion project to add a 16-bed medical rehabilitation unit to its existing facility, according to documents filed with the state and reported by local business news outlets.

The project, announced March 9, 2026, will utilize 6,400 square feet of existing “shell space” on the hospital’s third floor, bringing the total renovation area to 15,600 square feet. Renovations will also include updates to the hospital’s gym and nurses’ stations, according to filings with the Virginia Department of Health. Upon completion, Select Specialty Hospital will have a total of 76 inpatient beds.

Select Specialty Hospital, which currently operates 60 beds dedicated to long-term acute care, received approval from the state health commissioner to proceed with the expansion through the Certificate of Public Need (COPN) program. The hospital intends to finance the project using its own reserves, with approximately $7.9 million allocated to construction, $500,000 for design and engineering, and $1.5 million for equipment.

The fresh unit will focus on treating patients with a range of chronic and critical conditions, including infectious diseases and brain injuries, as well as cardiac issues and wound care. Hospital officials stated in their application that the addition of medical rehabilitation services will allow them to provide more comprehensive care, potentially leading to improved patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays, and reduced readmission rates to acute-care facilities.

The expansion comes almost three years after a change in ownership for the Henrico-based hospital. No specific construction timeline has been announced, but the Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing to release a Request for Proposal on March 26, 2026, for a separate project to increase surgical access at the Central VA Health Care system in Richmond, Virginia, a project valued between $10 million and $20 million.
