A fundraising appeal launched by Scunthorpe United has surpassed £3,000 in less than 24 hours to support defender Jonathan,who was injured in a train stabbing incident. The funds will assist with care, transport, and lost earnings during his recovery.
Jonathan, 22, signed with Scunthorpe in September after a pre-season trial and also plays for Bottesford Town under dual-registration rules. The incident has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and the wider football community.
club director Ellis described the response as “absolutely horrendous” and praised the “amazing” support,noting the initial £2,000 target was quickly exceeded. He highlighted the “reassuring solidarity” of Scunthorpe United fans and expressed hope that further donations will aid Jonathan’s recovery.
Scunthorpe United manager andy Butler called the incident “an awful thing to happen,” adding, “It hits close to home it really does.” He affirmed the club’s commitment to supporting Jonathan “every step of the way” and expressed his hope that the player “feels OK.”
In a statement, the club extended its “heartfelt well wishes” to Jonathan for a full recovery and also to all other victims involved in the train incident.
