Russian Oligarch Aide: Premier League Return Faces Investigation

A former senior executive at Chelsea Football Club could face renewed scrutiny should she return to a role in professional soccer, following revelations of financial irregularities during the club’s ownership under Roman Abramovich.

While the individual’s name has not been publicly released, sources indicate the potential investigation stems from concerns over undisclosed payments and potential breaches of Premier League regulations. This follows a recent investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) which revealed millions of pounds in secret payments made by Chelsea under Abramovich’s ownership. The Premier League has already concluded that Chelsea breached rules designed to promote financial fair play during Abramovich’s tenure. The league’s findings, reported by The New York Times, detailed years of rule-breaking. [3] These breaches included failing to provide complete and accurate financial information, and making payments that were not properly disclosed.

The potential investigation into the former aide centers on her role in overseeing these financial transactions and ensuring compliance with Premier League regulations. Her specific responsibilities included managing relationships with key stakeholders and overseeing the club’s financial administration.

The scrutiny comes as the UK government continues to address the fallout from Abramovich’s forced sale of Chelsea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The government previously directed Abramovich to donate the proceeds from the sale to a charitable foundation supporting Ukraine, or face potential legal action. [4] The sale, intended to prevent the club from facing sanctions, ultimately led to a consortium led by Todd Boehly acquiring the club. [4]

Further complicating the situation, reports have emerged suggesting that Abramovich’s associates may have attempted to circumvent sanctions through complex financial arrangements. [1] The extent to which these arrangements involved the former Chelsea executive remains unclear.

The Premier League has not commented on whether a specific investigation into the former aide is underway. Chelsea FC also declined to provide a statement. The potential for further investigations remains open as authorities continue to examine the club’s financial dealings under Abramovich’s ownership.
