Romero Focused on Spurs’ Relegation Battle, Dismisses Transfer Talk

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has downplayed speculation surrounding a potential summer transfer, emphasizing his commitment to the club’s immediate fight against Premier League relegation. The Argentine centre-back made the comments following Tottenham’s 3-2 victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday, a result that nevertheless saw the North London club eliminated from the competition with an aggregate score of 7-5.

Romero, who returned to the squad after observing concussion protocols, addressed questions about his future in a mixed zone interview with Spanish media. He stated, “The truth is that I’m focused on the situation we’re in. I have a lot of respect and affection for the club and I seek to finish the season in the best way possible. We’ll see later but the most important thing now is to recover energy to help Spurs.”

The 27-year-old’s comments come amid reported interest from Atlético Madrid, with their manager Diego Simeone publicly praising Romero on Tuesday. However, Romero deflected direct inquiries about a move, prioritizing Tottenham’s precarious league position. According to Wikipedia, Romero joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2022 after a loan spell, and currently captains the team.

Romero’s stance aligns with recent statements from other Tottenham players, including Micky van de Ven, who dismissed suggestions of a lack of commitment to the relegation battle, and Pedro Porro, who also downplayed talk of a return to Spain. This unified front comes as Tottenham attempt to recover from a challenging season.

Wednesday’s win against Atlético Madrid, while insufficient to progress in the Champions League, marked a significant morale boost for Tottenham, ending an eight-match winless run and securing a first victory for interim manager Igor Tudor. Tudor’s position had been under scrutiny following a 5-2 defeat in the first leg against Atlético, but recent results – including a 1-1 draw at Liverpool – have eased some of the pressure.

Tottenham now face a crucial Premier League fixture against fellow relegation-threatened side Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Porro emphasized the importance of building on the positive momentum from the Atlético match, stating, “This match was also good to gain some confidence despite the elimination. We’ve had some bad matches in the Premier League to be honest, but the last one against Liverpool, we also came out with a draw so we’re picking up some good feelings again and that’s the overall sense that we’re left with.”

The match against Nottingham Forest is considered a pivotal encounter in Tottenham’s fight for survival, with the club having suffered a 3-0 defeat at the City Ground in December. The outcome will significantly impact their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.
