Marc Overmars Returns to ajax in Technical Role
Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 27, 2025 – Marc Overmars has swiftly returned to Ajax, accepting a position within the club’s technical staff, just over three years after resigning as Director of Football Affairs. The former Arsenal winger will focus on youth development and scouting, effective instantly.
Overmars’ return marks a significant shift for both the individual and the club. His previous departure in February 2022 was prompted by reports of unwanted advances towards female colleagues, leading to a period of reflection and an apology issued by Overmars. Ajax, currently navigating a period of restructuring and seeking to regain its competitive edge in Dutch and European football, sees Overmars’ expertise as a valuable asset in identifying and nurturing future talent.
The appointment comes as Ajax seeks to revitalize its youth academy and strengthen its scouting network. Overmars’ deep understanding of the game, combined with his extensive network of contacts, are expected to be instrumental in identifying promising young players. Ajax CEO Alex Kroes stated the club engaged in extensive discussions with Overmars regarding his past conduct and received assurances of changed behavior.
Overmars enjoyed a successful playing career with Ajax from 1993 to 1997, winning the Champions League in 1995. He later served as the club’s Director of Football Affairs from 2012 to 2022, overseeing several successful transfer dealings and contributing to a period of sustained success for the Amsterdam-based club.
