Virginia secured victories in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay on the opening night of the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday, propelling them to the lead in the competition as they pursue a sixth consecutive national title.
The Cavaliers’ winning time in the 200-yard medley relay was 1:31.67, marking the fifth consecutive championship win in the event. The team comprised Sara Curtis, Emma Weber, and Bryn Greenwaldt, all earning their first NCAA titles. Virginia now holds the top ten fastest times ever recorded in the event.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Virginia finished in 6:45.21, establishing a new NCAA championship meet record.
Texas placed second overall after the first day of competition with 89 points, while Louisville and Stanford tied for third with 59 points each. Texas sophomore Jillian Cox won the 1650-yard freestyle in a pool-record time of 15:32.26, edging out California freshman Claire Weinstein (15:36.52). Virginia sophomore Katie Grimes finished third in the event with a time of 15:42.65.
The NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships began Wednesday, March 18 and will continue through Saturday, March 21. Thursday’s events include five swimming finals and one diving final at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
Virginia previously secured its fifth-straight DI women’s swimming and diving title in 2025, winning with 544 points, ahead of Stanford’s 417 points.
