Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday suggested the possibility of deploying ground troops into Iran to dismantle the current regime, according to reports emerging as the conflict enters a modern phase focused on attacks against Iran’s petroleum sector. The statement came as U.S. President Donald Trump asserted the offensive against Iran “is going to be over very soon” because Tehran “has no leadership left,” a claim that appears to contradict reports of continued Iranian retaliation.
The escalation follows coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel over the weekend that resulted in the deaths of Ayatollah Ali Jamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, and numerous other high-ranking officials. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks, expanding the dispute into a broader regional war. Initial reports indicate hundreds have been killed in Iran, alongside confirmed deaths of U.S. Military personnel and civilians in Israel and Arab Gulf nations.
Attacks by Iran on Wednesday and Thursday have reportedly reduced Qatar’s liquefied natural gas export capacity by 20 percent. Simultaneously, Iranian forces struck the Haifa refinery in Israel, the country’s largest, though initial reports from the Israeli Energy Minister indicate the damage was not severe. Iran’s armed forces have announced that their reprisals for the Israeli strike on Pars Sur, one of the world’s largest gas fields, are not yet complete.
The degree of alignment between the United States and Israel in this conflict remains a point of contention. Trump, via his Truth Social platform, stated he was unaware of Israel’s plans regarding the attack on the South Pars field, contradicting multiple reports from Israeli media outlets. This public messaging raises questions about the coordination of strategy and objectives between the two allies.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has reiterated justification for the war, expressing confidence that allies will find a solution to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the United States has not publicly acknowledged the extent of Israel’s independent actions, and the future leadership structure of Iran remains uncertain following Jamenei’s death. Trump has urged Iranians to seize the opportunity to overthrow the current theocratic government, but Notice no indications of such a movement gaining traction.
The conflict has prompted protests and celebrations globally, and the French navy intercepted a tanker suspected of being part of a clandestine Russian fleet. Ukraine is reportedly leveraging its drone expertise to assist Arab nations in countering Iranian attacks.
