McLaren‘s Championship hopes threatened as Verstappen Closes Gap, Progress Strategy Questioned
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – Max Verstappen is rapidly closing the gap on McLaren’s championship leaders, Lando norris and Oscar Piastri, sparking debate over whether the team prematurely shifted its development focus to the 2026 season. After a dominant five-race winning streak including four double victories between the Austrian and Dutch Grands Prix, McLaren has failed to reach the top step of the podium, allowing Verstappen to capitalize.
According to Sky Sports’ Backstage pit lane podcast, motorsport expert Ralf Schumacher believes McLaren may have halted development of its current car too soon. “They’re not quite as relaxed anymore,” schumacher observed, noting a visible change in demeanor from McLaren executives Zak Brown and Andrea Stella.
While Red Bull and other competitors have continued to introduce incremental updates, McLaren has reportedly concentrated its resources on the meaningful regulation changes slated for 2026.”I think that’s falling on their feet a bit now,” Schumacher stated.”From now on, this dominance went away.”
Verstappen’s recent form – winning three of the last four races – has seen him reduce the points deficit to 26 behind Norris and 40 behind piastri in the Drivers’ World championship. Schumacher suggests the intensifying competition necessitates a more balanced approach within the team. “You can no longer give preference to anyone,” he said.
With five races remaining in the season, McLaren faces a challenging task to maintain its competitive edge and secure both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. The team’s decision to prioritize long-term development over immediate gains is now under scrutiny as Verstappen’s momentum builds.
