Arne Slot has been confirmed as the novel head coach of Liverpool Football Club, set to seize over from Jürgen Klopp at the end of the current season. The appointment, announced by Liverpool FC on May 21, 2024, follows an agreement reached with Feyenoord, where Slot was previously head coach.
The Dutch coach, Arend Martijn Slot, born September 17, 1978, in Bergentheim, Netherlands, joins Liverpool after a successful tenure with Feyenoord. He led the club to the 2022-23 Eredivisie title and was awarded the league’s Coach of the Season award. His final match with Feyenoord was against Excelsior on Sunday, marking the conclusion of his time with the Dutch club, as stated by Feyenoord on their website.
Slot’s arrival at Anfield comes after a period of searching for a successor to Klopp, who announced his departure earlier this year. Liverpool officials reportedly reached a compensation agreement with Feyenoord in late April, finalizing the deal. Slot acknowledged the impending move during a press conference ahead of Feyenoord’s final match of the season, stating he would become Liverpool’s coach next season.
Prior to his role at Feyenoord, Slot managed AZ Alkmaar and Cambuur, and similarly served as a coach at PEC Zwolle, where he began his managerial career after retiring as a player in 2013. As a player, Slot represented PEC Zwolle, NAC Breda, and Sparta Rotterdam. He won the Dutch second-tier league title with PEC Zwolle in 2002 and again in 2012, also earning the league’s Player of the Year award in the latter season.
Slot’s appointment marks a significant moment for Liverpool, as he becomes the first Dutch manager to lead the club. He has been described by some media outlets as one of the best current football coaches. He indicated he is unconcerned with his official title at Liverpool, whether it be head coach or manager, stating his priority is working with the players on the pitch.
The club has not yet announced a formal introduction or press conference for Slot, and his start date is contingent upon receiving the necessary work permit, expected to be June 1, 2024.
