A student teacher at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown, New York, demonstrated self-defense techniques to students on March 11, drawing on her extensive training in martial arts.

Samantha Smith, currently student teaching in Nicole Fischetto’s fourth-grade class, is a member of the Paul Mitchell Martial Arts Team, a group with a long history in professional martial arts. During a session in the school gymnasium, Smith shared safety and defensive skills with students, emphasizing the importance of seeking help from trusted adults and standing up against bullying.

Students participated in drills, practicing an “attention stance” and a fighting stance, responding to Smith’s instruction with enthusiasm, according to a report from the school.
