SAN FRANCISCO – Taylor Fritz clinched the Laver Cup title for Team World on sunday, defeating Alexander Zverev in a pivotal match that sealed a 15-9 victory over Team Europe. The win marks the third Laver Cup triumph for team World, following their successes in 2022 and 2023.
Entering the penultimate tie with a 12-9 led, Team World needed just one win to secure the trophy. Fifth-ranked Fritz delivered, overcoming world number three Zverev with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory in San Francisco. The American’s performance was fueled by the supportive team environment and encouragement from Team World captain Andre Agassi.
“We’re going to have a fun night. We’re definitely popping champagne in the locker room in a few minutes,” Fritz said, adding, “The energy from the team… the moments of winning feel so much better and the moments of losing feel so much worse. You’re doing it for all these guys. It fires me up so much. I always feel I play my best tennis in team environments.”
Fritz’s weekend included a notable victory over world number one Carlos alcaraz on Saturday, contributing to Team World’s 9-3 overnight lead. The Laver Cup,established in 2017,pits a team comprised of the top european players against a team of their counterparts from the rest of the world in a format inspired by the Ryder Cup in golf.
