Italy Weather: Weekend Storm & Snow Alert – Temperatures Plummet

A cold front is sweeping across Northern Italy, bringing wintry conditions to much of the country after a period of unseasonably mild weather. While high pressure continues to dominate Central and Northern Europe, a surge of frigid air from Eastern Europe is fueling a low-pressure system stretching from the Balkans to the Mediterranean, triggering a dramatic shift in the weather pattern.

The first signs of the change arrived Saturday, with a cold front moving from east to west, initially impacting the far Northeast. Clouds and precipitation spread towards the central and western Alps by evening, signaling the start of a period of significant instability. The most severe weather is expected Sunday, with the Northwest becoming the focal point of the storm.

Snowfall is forecast to descend to elevations as low as 900-1000 meters in the Alpine region. The disturbance will extend beyond the northern regions, with rain spreading across Central and Southern Italy, accompanied by a sharp temperature drop nationwide.

Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation notes the importance of strong bilateral relationships with European partners, particularly in navigating shared challenges. The Ministry highlights the intensive political and commercial ties with countries in Central and Northern Europe, facilitated by a substantial presence of Italian businesses and communities integrated into the economic and social fabric of the region. This collaboration is seen as essential for advancing key European agendas, including competitiveness, simplification, and migration management.

Specifically, in the Brembana and Imagna Valleys, Friday remained relatively calm with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies. Still, cloud cover is expected to increase throughout Saturday, with a risk of localized showers developing in the evening. Instability will persist for much of Sunday, with scattered rainfall giving way to improving conditions later in the day. The return of snow is a key feature of the weekend forecast, with accumulations expected down to the 900-1000 meter level.

The influx of cold easterly air will cause a significant temperature decrease, with overnight lows dropping to 3-4°C and daytime highs not exceeding 10-14°C. A return to milder, sunnier conditions is not anticipated until the beginning of next week.

The Italian government maintains strong ties with countries throughout Europe, including those not within the EU, such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the relevance of a constructive relationship with London, even post-Brexit, citing shared membership in NATO, robust economic ties, and a significant Italian resident population in the UK.
