Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has publicly backed Alejandro Garnacho to overcome recent challenges and establish himself as a consistent performer for the club, despite limited playing time. The comments come as Garnacho faces scrutiny over his role within the team, following a period of inconsistent starts and a recent personal difficulty.
Rosenior addressed the situation during a press conference, emphasizing Garnacho’s potential and positive reaction to being named on the bench in recent matches. “Garna is a top player,” Rosenior stated. “I’ve changed a little bit tactically since I’ve come in; I’ve wanted to dominate midfield areas. That has meant at times I’ve only played with one winger, but Garna is an outstanding player.”
The Chelsea manager highlighted Garnacho’s attitude and function ethic, noting that the 21-year-old has been “training very, very well” and demonstrating “real positivity” even when not in the starting lineup. Rosenior specifically referenced Garnacho’s performance against Arsenal, where he made a positive impact coming off the bench. He also pointed to strong performances in the FA Cup against Charlton and Hull, and a two-goal contribution in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal.
Rosenior acknowledged the importance of consistency for young players, stating, “For any young player, the biggest thing to be challenged is your consistency level, but he’s showing really good signs, not just in training but in meetings, that he’s on a really good track.” He added that Garnacho will receive opportunities to play, given the team’s upcoming schedule.
Beyond on-field performance, Rosenior stressed the importance of character and consistent behavior. “I want to find out about people’s character not just when times are good, but when times are difficult as well,” he said. “So not just Garna, every player knows from the conversations I’ve had that how they operate day to day – not just in training but in meetings – affects my team selection.”
The backing from Rosenior comes after a period of debate surrounding the young winger’s role. Garnacho signed for Chelsea last summer for £40 million ($54m), but has started only two of seven Premier League games under Rosenior. The team is preparing for a busy schedule, including a trip to Aston Villa, an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Wrexham, and a Champions League last-16 clash with PSG. Pedro Neto’s suspension for the Aston Villa match is expected to create an opportunity for Garnacho to feature.
Former Chelsea star Frank Leboeuf recently labelled Rosenior’s behaviour with Garnacho as ‘insane’ after the coach passed a note to the player during a Champions League defeat to PSG, but Rosenior has defended his approach as a means of assessing player character under pressure.
