Movsar Evloev intends to showcase a performance demonstrating a clear skill gap when he faces Lerone Murphy in a featherweight bout at UFC London on Saturday, despite the fight not being for a championship title. Evloev, currently ranked number one in the division according to UFC.com rankings, believes the contest represents the highest level of competition within the 145-pound weight class.
The undefeated Russian fighter, boasting a 19-0 professional record, emphasized that external factors such as Murphy’s unblemished record or potential title implications are secondary to his own preparation. “It doesn’t really affect me and doesn’t make any kind of difference for me,” Evloev stated. “What’s most important in any fight…is the work you have done to prepare, the shape that you’re coming into the fight in.”
Evloev acknowledged that the UFC ultimately determines championship contenders, regardless of the outcome of his fight with Murphy. “No matter what I do, if I go out there and smoke him—have the craziest finish you can imagine—who decides what happens next is the UFC,” he said.
The bout against Murphy presents a unique challenge, according to Evloev, who identified the Englishman’s resilience in grappling exchanges as a key area of focus. “He’s great in striking, he’s got really heavy kicks, and maybe another thing he has is that he gets up really well after a takedown; not a lot of people have been able to hold him down,” Evloev explained. He intends to concentrate on disrupting Murphy’s ability to recover from takedowns.
Evloev dismissed the notion of simply seeking a spectacular finish, prioritizing instead a display of technical superiority. “People in my position…they have nothing else to say but ‘I have to finish him and make it an exciting finish,’ but I don’t think that’s what this is at all,” he said. “I think the most important thing is to reveal levels.”
The matchup comes after Murphy referenced a past sparring session where he reportedly dropped Evloev with a liver shot, according to the Independent. Murphy downplayed the significance of the incident, stating it occurred eight years ago and acknowledging Evloev’s subsequent development as a fighter. He described the upcoming fight as a separate event, respecting Evloev’s undefeated record and position as a top contender.
Both Evloev and Murphy enter the fight with undefeated records – Evloev at 19-0 and Murphy at 18-0 – setting the stage for a pivotal contest in the featherweight division. The winner is widely expected to be next in line to challenge current champion Alexander Volkanovski, according to reports.
