Emmy Night’s Chaotic Bit Leads to Unexpected Windfall for Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Los Angeles, CA – What began as a playful attempt to curtail lengthy acceptance speeches at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards has unexpectedly resulted in a notable donation boost for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Despite a running gag that saw the pledged donation dwindle into the negative, the youth organization is celebrating a $350,000 windfall thanks to the show’s host and broadcaster.
Emmy host nate Bargatze initiated the fundraising effort with a $100,000 pledge to the Boys & Girls Clubs at the start of the telecast. The catch? $1,000 would be deducted from the total for every second a winner exceeded their allotted speech time, and added for every second under the limit. Children from local Boys & Girls Clubs were stationed near the stage, holding the trophy for each winner before stepping aside.
However, the incentive proved largely ineffective. Several winners, including “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder, openly acknowledged the potential impact on the donation, with Einbinder jokingly offering to cover the difference. Comedian Seth Rogen lamented that the show was “messing over the Boys & Girls,” as the running tally plummeted, eventually falling to a negative $60,000.
“they were waiting to see the outcome in real time, like everyone else,” Lisa Anastasi, Chief Growth and External Relations Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs, told the Associated Press.
Ultimately, the organization received a “generous surprise.” Bargatze personally contributed an additional $250,000, and CBS stepped in with a $100,000 donation, bringing the total contribution to $350,000.
The unexpected outcome highlights the power of celebrity engagement and the generosity of the public, even amidst a bit of televised chaos. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides vital after-school programs and resources for young people across the country, and this ample donation will undoubtedly have a positive impact on their mission.
