Cricket Ireland is actively pursuing the launch of a Euro Nations Cup in 2027, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) now giving the proposal serious consideration. Talks between the ECB and Cricket Ireland regarding the tournament were initially held last September during England’s white-ball series against Ireland, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The potential benefits of an England presence are significant. Beyond the commercial advantages – increased broadcasting revenue and sponsorship opportunities – England’s involvement would address concerns about the availability of international-standard cricket grounds in Europe. Currently, a limited number of venues meet the requirements for hosting international matches.
Historically, the ECB has been hesitant about similar proposals. However, recent performances by Associate nations at the T20 World Cup, where both Italy and Scotland pushed England to competitive matches, coupled with encouragement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), have prompted a reassessment. England secured qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup by reaching the Super 8 stage of the current tournament, creating a window for participation in a European competition.
ECB officials recognize the potential for a European tournament to provide valuable playing opportunities for emerging English players. MacNeice, an ECB official, acknowledged the progress, stating, “In principle it’s really easy to do. Notice practicalities of logistics and existing broadcasting and all that sort of stuff. That’s the complicated kind of piece that has to be pieced together. So that work is ongoing, but what I honestly believe is that it’s much more than a kind of fanciful idea.”
MacNeice continued, “This time last year, it was a fanciful idea. Now it’s something that’s progressing far more. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s heading very much in that direction. We are certainly starting to consider how You can create room and build it into our future plans.”
The development comes as England and South Africa have postponed a scheduled T20 series in 2027, potentially freeing up space in the calendar for a latest European tournament. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup schedule for 2026 has also been finalized, indicating a busy international calendar that the Euro Nations Cup would need to navigate.
