Doncic & Pistons Shine: Lakers Rise, NBA Standings Update

Luka Dončić scored 60 points on Thursday, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 134-126 victory over the Miami Heat. The performance, which included nine 3-pointers, marks Dončić’s second 50-point game of the season, following a 51-point outing against the Chicago Bulls.

Dončić, a 27-year-old Slovenian point guard/shooting guard, also recorded seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals in 38 minutes of play. According to NBA.com, he shot 18-for-30 from the field and 15-for-19 from the free-throw line. The Lakers have now won eight consecutive games, solidifying their position in third place in the Western Conference, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers’ recent success comes after acquiring Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 offseason. He previously led the Mavericks for seven seasons, earning five All-NBA First Team selections and the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2019. Before joining the NBA, Dončić played for Real Madrid from 2015 to 2018, where he won a EuroLeague championship and was named EuroLeague MVP in 2018.

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons continued their winning streak, defeating the Washington Wizards 117-95, despite the absence of Cade Cunningham. Jalen Duren led the Pistons with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Detroit currently holds the top spot in the Eastern Conference, ahead of the Boston Celtics, and is preparing for the playoffs, scheduled to begin in mid-April.

Dončić’s performance drew significant attention, with the Miami Heat crowd chanting “MVP” during the game, as reported by ESPN. He is currently the NBA’s leading scorer, averaging 33.4 points per game, according to NBA.com. His recent form has been instrumental in the Lakers’ turnaround, and he is considered a strong contender for the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

The Lakers will continue their road trip, facing the Houston Rockets again on Saturday, following a previous win against them on Wednesday, where Dončić scored 40 points. The Pistons will return home to face the Orlando Magic next week.
