Crewe Residents Propose Revitalization of Historic Flag Lane⁤ Baths

Crewe, Cheshire – A community group is spearheading efforts to restore Crewe’s historic Flag⁤ Lane Baths, ‌proposing a multi-sport and social hub for ⁤the town. James Bellis, alongside Andrew Chandler and Brian Silvester, are championing a plan to transform the ‍currently derelict ‍building into a modern facility featuring padel tennis courts, a sauna, a café, studio space, and crucially, swimming facilities.

The iconic red brick building, currently boarded up and requiring ongoing⁢ security and repair ‍costs from the local authority, has been a focal point of local⁤ concern since its closure. The group’s initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on the council while concurrently preserving a cherished community landmark and addressing a need for accessible sports and recreation options ‍in Crewe. The proposal hinges on securing funding to allow the⁣ council‌ to transfer ownership under a community ⁣asset transfer scheme, a move already generating significant public support.

Outside the building, mr. Bellis explained the vision includes space for six ‍padel tennis courts, alongside the broader aim of‌ creating⁢ “something for everyone.” He ‌added, “We hope we could make it into‍ something for everyone.”

The plans have already garnered a “positive response” on social media, with hundreds of comments expressing nostalgia and a desire to see the baths saved. Residents have shared memories of learning to swim at the facility, highlighting its importance to generations of local families. “It would just be nice to see the building preserved, really, for⁢ generations to come and let’s get people swimming there again,” Mr. Bellis‌ stated. The group believes a accomplished project would not ‌only ‌preserve a local treasure but also provide ‌a valuable community ⁣resource, ‍possibly attracting visitors and boosting local engagement with sports and wellness activities. The council continues to bear‍ the costs⁤ of maintaining‌ security and conducting repairs at the site while considering the proposal.
