Charles Barkley’s March Madness Predictions: Arizona, Upsets & Miami Ohio

Charles Barkley ignited a spirited, and at times rambling, discussion about the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament field during truTV’s broadcast of the First Four games on Tuesday night, declaring the tournament an “Arizona ass-kicking Invitational” and voicing strong opinions on seeding decisions.

Barkley, appearing alongside Jalen Rose, Bruce Pearl, and Jamal Mashburn prior to the NC State versus Texas matchup, was asked for his prediction for the tournament’s eventual champion. His response quickly veered into a critique of the selection committee’s choices, specifically highlighting perceived slights against Miami (Ohio) and St. John’s.

“Listen, Michigan has a great team. I love coach (Dusty) May, I think that (LJ Cason) injury might hurt them a little bit,” Barkley said. He then pivoted to concerns about Duke’s injury situation, before offering a comparison between UConn and Florida, both of which earned No. 1 seeds.

Barkley’s most emphatic comments centered on Miami (Ohio), which finished the regular season with an unblemished 31-0 record but received a lower seed than he believed warranted. “And I’m going to make one thing perfectly clear: Miami Ohio got screwed, too. They should be a higher seed. They went 31-0, and I know my man Bruce Pearl, who I love, disagrees with me,” Barkley stated. He dismissed the importance of strength of schedule, arguing that the RedHawks should not be penalized for the quality of competition within their conference. “It’s not their fault everyone in their conference sucks. They only played the schedule they were dealt. They should be in the main draw.”

Despite his allegiance to Auburn, Barkley declared his support for Miami (Ohio) to make a run in the tournament. “And I don’t usually root for teams other than Auburn to be honest with you, but I’m rooting for Miami Ohio to advance in this tournament.” Miami (Ohio) is scheduled to play SMU in a First Four game on Wednesday.

Barkley’s broadcast appearance came on the same night that he and Dick Vitale made history, calling their first NCAA Tournament game together on television. The duo, alongside Brian Anderson, broadcast the Texas-NC State game, a First Four contest. Vitale, a longtime college basketball commentator, had previously been unable to call March Madness games due to ESPN’s broadcasting rights, but was able to join Barkley for the TNT Sports broadcast. According to Vitale, working with Barkley was one of the five best highlights of his 46-year broadcasting career.
