Bernal Scores First Champions League Goal | Barcelona News

Barcelona advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after a dominant 7-2 victory over Newcastle United at Camp Nou on Tuesday, completing an 8-3 aggregate win. The match saw Marc Bernal score his first Champions League goal for Barcelona.

The game was characterized by a back-and-forth first half, with Anthony Elanga scoring twice for Newcastle to level the score on two occasions. Raphinha and Marc Bernal each found the net for Barcelona in the opening 20 minutes. Lamine Yamal then converted a penalty in added time to give Barcelona a 3-2 lead heading into the break.

Barcelona surged ahead in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals. Fermín López extended the lead six minutes after the restart, followed by a brace from Robert Lewandowski in quick succession. Raphinha added his second goal of the night in the 72nd minute, completing the rout.

The seven goals scored by Barcelona equaled their highest tally in a Champions League knockout match, matching a 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2011-12 season. Newcastle’s seven goals conceded tied the most conceded by an English team in a UEFA competition, equaling Tottenham’s 7-2 loss to Bayern Munich in 2019.

Barcelona will now face Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals. The first leg between Barcelona and Newcastle had ended in a 1-1 draw, with Harvey Barnes scoring for Newcastle and Lamine Yamal scoring for Barcelona.
