Kimi Antonelli, at 19 years and 202 days old, secured his first Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the second-youngest race winner in the sport’s history. The Mercedes driver delivered a composed performance from pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit, surpassing Lewis Hamilton’s recent podium finish for Ferrari as the major talking point of the race.
Antonelli’s win extends Mercedes’ dominant start to the 2026 season. He finished 5.5 seconds ahead of teammate George Russell, completing a one-two finish for the Silver Arrows. “I am speechless. I want to cry, to be honest,” Antonelli said, according to ESPN. “I said yesterday that I really want to bring Italy back on top, and I did that today. I gave myself a heart attack at the end, but it was a great race.”
The race also marked Lewis Hamilton’s first podium finish with Ferrari, taking third place after a close battle with Charles Leclerc. Hamilton’s result ended a 477-day wait for a podium appearance. The British driver briefly led the race but was overtaken by Antonelli and Russell.
Ollie Bearman of Haas impressed with a fifth-place finish, demonstrating a strong recovery drive. The race saw several retirements, including world champion Lando Norris, who suffered an electrical problem before the start, and Oscar Piastri, who experienced a mechanical issue. Max Verstappen also failed to finish, breaking down with 10 laps remaining whereas in sixth place.
Antonelli’s pole position was secured after Russell encountered a gearbox glitch during qualifying. The young Italian capitalized on the opportunity, leading from the start and maintaining control throughout the race. The victory places Antonelli firmly in contention for the world championship, according to reports.
The Chinese Grand Prix also highlighted the competitive intensity between Mercedes and Ferrari, with both teams showcasing strong pace and strategic maneuvers.
