Syracuse University is actively searching for a new head coach for its men’s basketball program following the dismissal of Adrian Autry, the university confirmed Thursday.
The move comes less than two years after Autry was appointed the eighth head coach of the Syracuse Orange, succeeding the legendary Jim Boeheim after 47 seasons. Autry’s tenure ended after a three-year period, concluding in March 2026. He finished with an overall record of 49-48, a .505 winning percentage.
The university announced the hiring of Bryan Blair as its new athletic director one day prior to Autry’s firing, signaling a potential shift in leadership and direction for the basketball program. Blair’s role in the coaching search is central, as he will oversee the selection of Autry’s replacement.
Autry, a former point guard for the Orange from 1990 to 1994, returned to Syracuse as an assistant coach in 2011, eventually rising to the position of associate head coach in 2017. During his time as an assistant, Syracuse reached the NCAA Tournament seven times, including Final Four appearances in 2013 and 2016. He guided the team to a 20-12 record in his first season as head coach in 2023-24, marking the first 20-win season for the program since 2013-14.
Prior to his return to Syracuse, Autry had coaching stints at Bishop Ireton High School, Paul VI High School, and Virginia Tech. He also served as the director of basketball operations at Virginia Tech from 2008 to 2010.
As of Friday, March 20, 2026, Syracuse University has not publicly announced a list of candidates to replace Autry. The athletic department has not provided a timeline for the selection process, and Blair has not commented on potential candidates.
