President Donald Trump declared Friday he does not intend to pursue a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, stating, “We can talk, but I don’t seek a ceasefire. You don’t do a ceasefire when you’re annihilating the other side.”
Speaking to reporters before departing for Florida, Trump asserted that Iran’s military capabilities have been effectively neutralized. “They have no Navy. They have no Air Force. They have no equipment. They have no spotters. They have no anti-air defense. They have no radar. And their leaders have all been killed at every level. We don’t want that,” he added.
Trump further claimed the United States has “won” the war against Iran, stating, “We destroyed their navy, we destroyed the air force, we destroyed the anti-air defense, we destroyed everything.”
The President’s comments come despite previous diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. Multiple rounds of negotiations, led by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, failed to yield a resolution prior to the outbreak of hostilities.
The conflict escalated significantly on February 28th, with a coordinated strike by the U.S. And Israel resulting in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, in Tehran, along with numerous other high-ranking Iranian officials. In response, Iran has launched retaliatory attacks against several nations in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, and Oman, claiming to target only U.S. And Israeli interests within those countries.
The closure of the Strait of Ormuz, a critical waterway controlled by Tehran and responsible for approximately 20% of global oil and gas transit, continues to contribute to rising fuel prices and inflationary pressures worldwide, including within the United States. Trump suggested China and Japan should collaborate in ensuring maritime security in the region.
According to reports, thousands of U.S. Marines and sailors are currently en route to the Middle East, signaling the Trump administration’s preparation for a prolonged conflict. Trump has also publicly criticized allies within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for their lack of direct support in the war against Iran, labeling them “cowardly.” He has called on these allies to provide assistance, while simultaneously suggesting that a U.S. Victory could compel them to take action regarding the security of the Strait of Ormuz.
Trump also expressed frustration with allies who have declined to assist U.S. Forces, questioning what would happen if the U.S. Were to “finish off” the remaining elements of the Iranian state and abandon the responsibility for securing the Strait of Ormuz to the nations that utilize it. He stated that such a scenario would “make some of our indifferent ‘allies’ move, and speedy!!!”
