Penn State wrestling dominated the opening day of the 2026 NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, scoring a record 40.5 points and easily leading the team standings on Thursday, March 19th, according to reports from the event.
The Nittany Lions won 18 of their 20 opening matches, earning bonus points in all but three contests. Seven Penn State wrestlers entered the tournament as No. 1 seeds, contributing to the team’s strong performance. Nebraska currently trails in second place with 27 points, followed by Iowa and Oklahoma State, both with 25 points.
PJ Duke, a Penn State rookie, recorded two pins on the day, contributing significantly to the team’s point total. Josh Barr, a sophomore, maintained his season-long streak of scoring bonus points with an 11-3 victory over Dillon Bechtold of Bucknell.
Not all matches went Penn State’s way. Cole Mirasola lost a 4-0 decision to Iowa’s Ben Kueter in a heavyweight bout, their third meeting of the season. Mirasola had previously lost to Kueter 2-0 at the Substantial Ten Championships two weeks prior. Braeden Davis also suffered a loss for the Nittany Lions.
The NCAA Championships will continue through Saturday night, with quarterfinals scheduled for noon on Friday, March 20th, on ESPNU and ESPN+. Semifinals will be held at 8 p.m. On ESPN2 and ESPN+. The tournament is available to stream on ESPN+ and Fubo, which is offering a free trial for new members.
Penn State is aiming to secure its fifth consecutive men’s team title. The women’s tournament concluded on March 6-7, with McKendree crowned as the first champion.
First-round matchups included No. 1 Like Lilledahl facing No. 32 Mack Mauger or No. 33 Jace Schafer at 125 pounds and No. 1 Shayne Van Ness competing against No. 32 Clayton Jones or another opponent at 149 pounds. Braeden Davis, seeded 14th at 141 pounds, faced Haiden Drury of Utah Valley.
