Poland: Investigation Closed in Farmer’s Death Linked to Million-Dollar Land Dispute

Polish prosecutors have dropped an investigation into the death of Stanisław W., a 77-year-old man found dead in his home in Kosakowo, Poland, on January 31, 2025. The decision, made on December 29, 2025, concludes a probe into suspicions that his death was linked to a long-running dispute over a multi-million złoty property, according to a statement released Thursday by Mariusz Kaźmierczak, a spokesperson for the Gdańsk Regional Court.

Kaźmierczak stated that the detailed reasoning behind the decision to close the case remains sealed, citing Article 98, paragraph 1 of the Polish Code of Criminal Procedure, which allows for a delay in issuing a written justification. He indicated that the full justification is expected within the next seven days.

The investigation centered on whether Stanisław W.’s death resulted from an accidental fall or involved foul play. Investigators found the victim with head injuries and a stab wound to the back of the head, but forensic experts were unable to definitively determine the cause of death.

At the heart of the case lies a dispute over approximately 7 hectares of land in Kosakowo and Kazimierz, valued at a minimum of 8 million złoty. Agnieszka W., the wife of Rajmund W., known as “Mundek,” is listed as the landowner in the land registry. According to reporting from the Polish Press Agency in 2020, Stanisław W. Had previously described being coerced into transferring a portion of his land. “He frightened me so effectively that I agreed to transfer one plot in exchange for settling a debt,” Stanisław W. Reportedly said at the time.

The property transfer is subject to restrictions recorded in the land registry, preventing its sale or transfer. The legal battle over the land has been ongoing, and a civil case remains active in the courts.

The case has seen prior judicial review. In February 2024, the Polish Supreme Court overturned a previous ruling related to a 2011 donation agreement concerning the land. The case was subsequently returned to the Gdańsk Court of Appeal. The land came into the possession of Rajmund W. And his wife through an agreement executed before notary Hanna W. In Gdynia.

The ongoing civil proceedings concerning the property remain separate from the closed criminal investigation into Stanisław W.’s death.
