Parents Divided on ‘Rent‘⁤ for Adult Children Living at ‌Home

Sydney, Australia – A growing ‍number of Australian ⁤families are grappling with the question of whether,⁤ and how‍ much, to charge their adult children for living at home,⁤ as rising living costs and⁢ a competitive housing market keep young adults reliant on ‌parental support for longer. Financial expert Joel Gibson says there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, emphasizing the importance of considering⁣ individual circumstances and ⁤using‌ the arrangement as‍ a financial learning ⁢opportunity.

The debate is particularly relevant now as more young people delay financial⁣ independence, facing challenges ⁢like high rental prices and stagnant wages. While ⁤family values differ, experts suggest a thoughtful approach‍ to “board” can instill crucial financial literacy and duty in adult children. A⁣ recent online poll revealed ⁣a⁤ wide range ⁤of practices, with families requesting anywhere from $50 to $300 per week.

Gibson highlighted several key questions parents should address before deciding on an arrangement. “How old are they? How much are they earning? What ‌are they presently spending their‌ money on ⁣and do you think,‍ as a parent, they‍ are spending their money on the right things?” he asked. He also stressed the importance of understanding‍ whether⁣ children are saving or investing, and whether parents themselves require⁢ financial assistance.

Gibson outlined several approaches to determining a fair amount. Options include calculating the market rate for a room, charging a percentage of ⁢the child’s ⁤income, or – crucially – directing any payments received into a dedicated savings or ‌investment account to help them save ⁤for a⁢ deposit.

“It’s crucial to teach them certain values about money, that when you do start earning, you should‍ be saving,”‌ Gibson said. “But for me it’s about making sure you teach them certain values around money.”
